DIVERSIDAD DEL BOSQUE LLUVIOSO - ORÍGENES E IMPLICACIONES
El bosque lluvioso alberga la mayor diversidad de organismos vivos sobre la Tierra.
A pesar de que cubre menos del 2 por ciento de la superficie terrestre,
se estima que aloja al 50 por ciento de los seres vivos del planeta. El número
de criaturas que habita en este tipo de bosques es tan grande—una estimación de 5-50 millones de especies— que resulta casi
incomprensible. Estos números sugieren que el grado de conocimiento
que tenemos acerca de los bosques es limitado. Por ejemplo, mientras que los
bosques templados están dominados normalmente por media docena de especies de árboles o
menos (90 por ciento de las especies del bosque),
un bosque lluvioso tropical puede llegar a tener más de 480 especies de árboles
en una sola hectárea (2.5 acres). Un solo arbusto en el Amazonas podría tener
más especies de hormigas que las islas británicas en conjunto. La diversidad de
bosques lluviosos no es casualidad, sino que es el resultado de una serie
de circunstancias únicas.
